Mole Control in Snohomish County

Locally Owned Mole Control, IPM Methods, No Harsh Chemicals

Moles can reduce a well-kept lawn to a patchwork of raised ridges and volcano-shaped mounds in a matter of weeks. At Snohomish Pest, we provide residential mole control throughout Snohomish County using eco-friendly, IPM-based methods that target active moles without harsh chemicals. Our state-licensed technicians are led by owners Jordan Sanberg and Jimmy Long, longtime Snohomish County residents who know the specific pest pressures homeowners here face.

If you’re seeing fresh mounds or spongy turf, the problem may not resolve on its own. Call Snohomish Pest today at (425) 510-5834 to schedule a mole control assessment.

Why Snohomish County Lawns Attract Moles

The same deep, moist soils that make western Washington gardens so productive also make them ideal mole habitat. Snohomish County’s conditions support dense populations of earthworms and soil invertebrates, which is precisely what moles are after. The dominant species here is the Townsend’s mole, the largest mole species in North America, and it thrives in the soft, workable soils common across the county.

Moles build two types of tunnels: deep permanent runs, typically 3 to 12 inches below the surface, used for daily travel, and shallow surface tunnels that leave raised ridges visible across the lawn. The signs homeowners notice include:

Signs of active mole damage:

  • Volcano-shaped mounds: Loose, rounded soil pushed up from below as moles excavate
  • Raised ridges: Visible surface runs crossing the lawn in irregular lines
  • Spongy patches: Areas where the turf feels soft or hollow underfoot
  • Dying grass: Sections where tunnel activity has disturbed or exposed root systems

One detail worth knowing: moles don’t eat plant roots. Root damage is usually caused by voles, a separate pest that moves into mole tunnel systems. If your plants are disappearing alongside the mounded soil, both animals may be active.

Mole activity peaks in spring, from March through May, and again in fall, from September through November, when cool, moist soil is easiest to work. In western Washington, though, moles remain active year-round, and new animals can re-enter an existing tunnel network from neighboring properties after removal is complete. WSU Extension doesn’t recommend repellents, vibrating stakes, or castor oil for Pacific Northwest moles; targeted trapping is the method that actually works.

Our Four-Visit Mole Control Process

Effective mole control requires more than a single treatment. Moles follow established tunnel networks, so treatment depends on identifying active runs rather than just surface mounds. Our mole service is structured as a four-visit program designed to confirm activity, treat thoroughly, and verify results.

How the service works:

  • Inspection: We map tunnel activity and identify active runs versus abandoned ones, establishing where moles are actually moving
  • Baiting and Gassing: We apply targeted treatment to active tunnels using methods aligned with our IPM approach, avoiding traditional harsh chemicals
  • Follow-Up Visits: Subsequent visits confirm that treatment reached active moles and check for signs of new activity entering from adjacent properties
  • Maintenance Guidance: We provide property-specific recommendations to reduce the conditions that draw moles back

Even after treatment, moles can re-enter through existing tunnel systems from nearby properties. Follow-up visits and prevention guidance aren’t optional extras; they’re built into every service.
